Dear John,
Today we are honored to celebrate Augusta Thomas Day in remembrance of National Vice President for Women and Fair Practices Emeritus Augusta Y. Thomas.
Established in 2018 by an AFGE National Executive Board proclamation, Oct. 14 of every year is the day that AFGE celebrates our civil rights icon who dedicated her life advocating for racial equality and union rights. It’s also the day of community service, the day we find ways to give back to our communities, to help those who cannot help themselves, as inspired by the life and legacy of Augusta Thomas.
As we remember her impact on labor and social justice movements, we invite you to join your AFGE family in giving back to your communities. This election season there are plenty of ways to get involved.

As National Vice President for Women and Fair Practices, Ms. Augusta was instrumental in shaping the future and policies of our union.
She established the Y.O.U.N.G. (Young Organizing Unionists for the Next Generation) program to include and promote younger workers within AFGE and the labor movement. She established the AFGE Pride program to make AFGE a safe zone for all AFGE members within this union believing that an injustice to one community is an injustice to all. She actively promoted voter protection to make sure that every vote was counted.
We are grateful for all that Ms. Augusta shared with our union. We will continue to live up to her legacy.
In Solidarity,
AFGE
P.S. Check out this latest video from the Coalition of Labor Union Women. This organization was important to Ms. Augusta and it has an important message about the power of women's voices.
