"The Road Ahead" is Now Available!

The Road Ahead cover

The NPH regional paper, "The Road Ahead: A 21st Century Housing Strategy for the San Francisco Bay Area," has recently been released! In the midst of regional and national conversations around how to respond to and recover from COVID-19 and address racial equity in housing, NPH’s regional paper examines the intersection of housing, racial justice, public health.

Here in the Bay Area, as our regional governing agencies examine critical policy decisions and planning processes right now, the paper's framework offers why and how the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) can develop, approve, and implement a comprehensive housing strategy for the Bay Area.

One specific opportunity comes this Thursday, 10/15, as ABAG holds a vote on the Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA). This process requires that our region plan for our future housing needs for the next eight years, while actively designing strategies to address existing housing affordability, patterns of residential segregation, and exclusionary zoning practices. As laid out in the "Road Ahead," RHNA should focus growth close to jobs and transit using the Plan Bay Area 2050 development pattern that takes into consideration the number of households currently living in a jurisdiction and the number of households that are expected to be added over the next several decades.

Read more about NPH's RHNA recommendations and additional bold, regional strategies offered to advance a comprehensive regional strategy:
