Dear Friends,

I spent most of September 11th 2001, watching tv and holding Dahlia, who was 4 months old at the time, grateful that she was too young to understand what was happening.

The acts of terrorism and pleas for help that I saw that day are etched in my mind forever. So are images of heroic firefighters, police officers and other first responders who rushed into harm’s way to rescue people they did not know.  The neighbors who gave food, clothing and shelter to people who could not get home.  The global responses of sympathy and support.

In response to this tragic day, Knoxville raised over $950,000 to buy a 95-foot tower ladder truck for the New York City Fire Department, replacing one that was lost on September 11th.  The fire truck was called the Freedom Engine, and it served and protected the people of East Harlem for more than a decade.  The people of Knoxville are compassionate, caring and generous, and I’m proud to call Knoxville home.

Knoxville's first responders climb the Sunsphere in honor of the firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11.

On this solemn anniversary, please take a moment to remember the lives lost that day and all the families impacted by such senseless acts.  Please join me in thanking Knoxville’s first responders who serve and protect us every day.
