BSO musicians file charges against orchestra
The Baltimore Symphony Musicians union [link removed] filed charges on Monday against BSO management, accusing it of bad-faith bargaining after locking out the musicians all summer. They returned to the bargaining table Monday but after management insisted on proposals that included 20% wage and benefit cuts, the union's negotiating committee unanimously recommended rejection of the "take it or leave it" offer. A vote was scheduled for Tuesday night. "This is a dark day in the history of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra," Musicians said in a statement. "This dispute isn't just about money. It is also about respect, respect for the quality of the musicians on stage, respect for generations of Marylanders who have built this orchestra and for the thousands of people who have bought tickets and have donated to this venerable institution." MD state workers demand action on staffing crisis
State and higher education employees in Maryland say that a shortage of state workers is hampering their ability to provide critical services. And after a summer of no answers or solutions from management and increasing violence in Maryland state facilities, state employees say they're ready to take their fight to the next level. "Chronic understaffing has meant state employees workloads have expanded to the breaking point, mandated overtime is skyrocketing, and work environments are increasingly dangerous," wrote AFSCME Council 3 President Patrick Moran in a September 2 column published in the Capital Gazette. Council 3 members are calling on the Maryland General Assembly to convene emergency hearings this fall to identify the cause of the staffing crisis and find solutions. Members are holding meetings at worksites across the state to sign petitions and write letters to their legislators asking for their support in their fight to convene these hearings.

Substitute teachers organize for WTU bargaining rights
Washington Substitute Teachers United (WSTU) has submitted a petition asking that DCPS substitute teachers be included in the WTU bargaining unit. The substitutes have not received a pay raise since 2008 and are paid $15 an hour with no benefits, due process rights or access to professional development programs. Their petition -- signed by nearly 150 teachers -- says, in part: "We are professionals and we deserve to be paid what we are worth. We the undersigned substitute teachers demand that DCPS raise our pay and respect our right to organize a union." The WTU is working closely with the substitutes to determine "the quickest, most efficient way" to bring them into the WTU bargaining unit.

Labor History Today (9/8): Longest - and most divisive - teacher strike in NYC history

Teacher-community solidarity was the key to victory in the 2018 Los Angeles teacher's strike, but this wasn't the case in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Ocean Hill-Brownsville in 1968 when the longest teacher strike in New York City history also turned out to be its most divisive. Nick Juravich explains why.

Some 75,000 coal miners in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia end a ten-week strike after winning an eight hour day, semi-monthly pay, and the abolition of overpriced company-owned stores, where they had been forced to shop. - 1897

More than 3,000 people died when suicide highjackers crashed planes into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. Among the dead in New York were 634 union members, the majority of them New York City firefighters and police on the scene when the towers fell - 2001

Crystal Lee Sutton, the real-life Norma Rae of the movies, dies at age 68. She worked at a J.P. Stevens textile plant in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. when low pay and poor working conditions led her to become a union activist - 2009
