Join the 2021 Giving Project Cohort: Attend an Info Session

Join the 2021 Giving Project, <[link removed]> an online, five-month virtual experience beginning in February. We’re currently looking for 20 people to be part of a cohort that will raise resources for social justice organizations led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color (BIPOC) across Minnesota.

The priority application deadline is Friday, November 20, 2020. BIPOC, LGBTQ people, and low- or no-wealth individuals are especially encouraged to apply.

Before you apply, register for and attend an info session <[link removed]> on Zoom. Program staff and alumni will share details about the program model and answer your questions, giving you what you need to know before you apply.

We've scheduled three info sessions: Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. ; Saturday, November 7 at 10 a.m. ; or Thursday, November 12 at 7 p.m. Once you register, your confirmation e-mail will include the Zoom login link.

The Transformation Fund Appliaction Launches in November

Starting next month, we begin accepting applications from Minnesotan organizations for support from The Transformation Fund. Eligible organizations can apply for $ 25,000 of general operating support per year for three years, for a total of up to $ 75,000. Providing these multi-year, flexible investments is part of our strategy and committment to support movement needs over the long-term—please stay tuned for details on how to apply.






















Meet Program Assistant Lillian Gray

Last month, Lillian Gray joined the HFJ staff team as our program assistant. Lillian is now a key member of the program team, helping manage the 2021 Giving Project. She also works with colleagues across departments on day-to-day operations and communications.

Program Director Allison Johnson Heist said, "Lillian comes at the perfect time as my team and I start recruiting for our next Giving Project cohort. I’m so excited for her to work in community with staff, program participants, and grantees."

Meet Our Four New Board Members

Bilal Alkatout <[link removed]>, Bile Daad <[link removed]>, Filiberto Nolasco Gomez <[link removed]>, and AsaleSol Young recently joined the HFJ board. "Our newest board members reflect the communities, movements, and values Headwaters stands with and for every day," said President Maria De La Cruz. "It's clear to me that the Foundation is already benefitting from the leadership each one brings to the table."

Minnesota Can’t Afford Prime Day Rally <[link removed]>

October 14 at 4 p.m.

Amazon Fulfillment Center: 2601 4th Street East, Shakopee

On day 2 of "Prime Day," join Amazon workers & community members to choose our health over Amazon's wealth. We will come together to send Jeff Bezos a message: Amazon might try to use the pandemic to intimidate us, but they will not silence us!

MARCH for DACA, TPS, and DED: Legalization NOW! <[link removed]>

Senator Amy Klobuchar’s office: 1200 S Washington Ave, Minneapolis

Immigrants are under constant attack. DACA, TPS and DED are in the crosshairs of the anti-immigrant politicians.

CAIR-MN is part of a coalition that invites you to join us in marching to demand that the Senate take action by passing the ‘Clean Dream Act’ otherwise known as The American Dream and Promise Act at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. We will march to demand that Senator Klobuchar take leadership in getting the U.S. Senate pass this bill that the House of Representatives already passed that would give permanent protection for those with DACA, TPS and DED status!

No Evictions in Minneapolis! Training and Doorknock <[link removed]>

Powderhorn Park: Southside of the park down the hill from 35th Street East

We, the people of Minneapolis, will NOT allow evictions in our community! Governor Walz weakened the eviction moratorium to allow for some evictions to take place. Now, our neighbors across the city are being displaced in the middle of a health and financial crisis.

Come learn about DEFENDING OUR COMMUNITIES, and BUILDING POWER AS RENTERS & ALLIES! We will start with an update about what we know of evictions happening right now, and after a brief training we will go out and canvass our neighbors that are currently facing eviction. We will NOT be moved, we will NOT be short-changed of our right to safe shelter, especially when #HomesAreHealthcare <[link removed]> during the pandemic and beyond.

**Meeting while remaining socially distanced: A big part of protecting our community is to protect each other from COVID-19. If you attend this meeting, please always wear a face mask and remain at least six feet apart. Please do not attend if you are not feeling well at all**

This is a space to connect and reflect on the work we have to do leading up to and after the elections. A couple storytellers will ground us in the realities of the world as it is now, and the need for transformative change.

Create! Dance and Photography Workshop <[link removed]>

October 16 at 4:30 p.m.

Como Park Butterfly Lot: 1237-1231 Kaufman Drive, Saint Paul

For youth ages 8 to 15

Experience the joy and fun of dance, while learning the elements of photography and how images can inspire choreography and creativity! Each class will consist of a group photo walk to help participants focus on their photography goals and let them practice the new skills they’ve learned. During these photo walks, they will develop and hone their visual acuity, looking for light, shadows, shapes, and more. The participants will then apply the elements of photography to movement scores and short, informal and sometimes improvised, dance performances. The artists will work to explore and integrate principles of dance and photography to make creations that are both physically and visually exciting!

Location: The workshop will be held outdoors at Como Park. Participants will meet at the Como Park Butterfly Lot for drop off and pick up.

Rivoli Revival: Fall Celebration Event Series <[link removed]>

Light Up The Night Candle Vigil <[link removed]>

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and American Indian Community Housing Organization (AICHO) is hosting a virtual community event titled, "Light Up The Night" Candle Vigil.

On Tuesday - October 20 at 7 p.m., we invite and encourage you all to light a candle, wherever you are, in honor of someone you know that has been impacted by domestic violence.

Let's put a light into the darkness and let's REMEMBER and give HONOR to our relatives and community members who have been/are living in violence.

Once you light a candle, please reflect amongst yourself and/or with others about what safety from violence should look like, safety protocols, and familiarize yourself with area Domestic Violence organizations/ resources.

Who will you light your candle for?

At AICHO, we REMEMBER and we ADVOCATE for those in our community impacted by violence. We are lighting a candle to remember those who have lost their life to domestic violence, to honor the individuals & families we serve, and to advocate for lasting social change in our community and beyond.

We also light a candle for those who are suffering in silence to let them know we are here for them.

In 2019 at least 16 women in Minnesota died at the hands of their intimate partner. The Southeast Asian Diaspora Project (SEAD) in partnership with the M is proud to present 1.5: A Southeast Asian Diaspora Remix. The exhibition showcases work by Southeast Asian diaspora artists. As part of reimagining the 45th anniversary of the diaspora, SEAD has gathered stories from the community and worked with artists to respond to stories with visual artworks.

Black Lines Matter is a regular writing space for Black communities to connect, get feedback and engage other Black poets. This is a space where we think through the craft of writing and the tactics of liberation.

These sessions will be bi-weekly geared toward two things 1) Holding space for Black writers to create and share new work. 2) Studying poetic craft through Black writing pulling from historic and contemporary writers. Join us as we search through language to celebrate, survive and fight. We are the garden we need to grow.
