In a moment, friend, I’m going to ask you to support our people-first campaign’s critical get-out-the-vote efforts with a donation of $5. But first, I’m going to tell you why your donation is so important right now.
Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett is a direct affront to everything Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for. And her confirmation to a lifetime appointment is a threat to the future of reproductive rights, voting rights, marriage equality, workers’ rights, civil rights, and quality health care.
During this week’s Senate hearing, Amy Coney Barrett has repeatedly dodged questions about Roe v. Wade, refused to acknowledge systemic racism, and did not commit to recusing herself from cases that could determine the fate of the Affordable Care Act — despite her past public criticisms of the law and the fact that the president who picked her wants to take health care away from millions of people.
If confirmed, Amy Coney Barrett would immediately act to carry out Republicans’ right-wing agenda to reverse our hard-fought progress. The Supreme Court could make a decision on the Affordable Care Act as soon as one week after Election Day, putting millions more people at risk of having their health care taken away from them even as COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the country and at a time when more than 87 million people are already uninsured or underinsured. After being picked by Trump, we know that she would also work to overturn Roe v. Wade and strip people of their reproductive freedoms and constitutional rights. And her history of anti-LGBTQ+ statements make it all but certain that she would work to put an end to marriage and workplace equality.
There is no greater contrast to all of this than Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work on the Supreme Court. Justice Ginsburg used her position to protect and expand women’s rights, reproductive rights, voting rights, civil rights, and workers’ rights. During her time on the Court, she helped drive progress on LGBTQ+ equality, health care, immigration, and the environment. While she brought us forward, Amy Coney Barrett would set us back.
That’s why the Republican Senate is rushing through her nomination before Election Day — going against their own words in 2016 when they outright refused to give Merrick Garland a hearing, and disrespecting the wishes of the majority of voters and Ruth Bader Ginsburg herself. Republicans have been waiting for an opportunity to reverse our progress for years, and they would have the chance with Amy Coney Barrett in a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.
So we need to fight like hell to keep our House majority, take back the Senate, and defeat Trump. The good news is that we have a national organizing program in place to elect progressives up and down the ballot, but we can only do that work if we have the resources necessary. I’m counting on grassroots supporters like you to help fund our essential get-out-the-vote efforts through Election Day.
Every issue we care about in this election is at stake, so it’s up to us to organize like hell, fight, and win. Will you chip in for the first time with $5 or whatever you can right now to power our organizing efforts?
