Hi John,
Today was the second day of hearings on the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Two particularly shocking things happened, making it clear that Judge Barrett does not belong on our highest court.
First, Judge Barrett refused to say that it is illegal to intimidate voters at the polls. (It is). This answer is terrifying. With Trump’s open encouragement of violent hate groups and suggestion that his supporters go to the polls to “watch closely,” armed voter intimidation is a real threat this election.
Then, Judge Barrett confirmed her reckless and extreme Second Amendment views. She has argued before, and did again today, that people convicted of certain serious felonies should not be prevented from having firearms. Put simply: Judge Barrett believes that felons should not have the right to vote but they should have the right to firearms. This position goes against nearly every single federal appeals court decision on the issue. If it weren’t already clear, today Judge Barrett confirmed that she is the gun lobby’s dream justice.
If Judge Barrett is confirmed, virtually all of our progress on gun violence prevention is at stake. Popular and effective gun safety laws like background checks, measures to disarm domestic abusers, and stronger rules for purchasing semi-automatic assault rifles could all be struck down.
We are working harder than ever to oppose Barrett’s nomination but we know that we must also focus on protecting our progress. That means fighting to elect leaders who have the courage to take bold action to stop gun violence and working to defeat the gun lobby’s bogus challenges to Initiative 1639. We cannot do this without your support. Please give $5 today to help fund this fight:
