Introducing Judge Amy Coney Barrett

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to introduce Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Senate Judiciary Committee on the first day of her Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

Education. Faith. Family. Community. Equal justice under the law. These are all values that Midwesterners hold dear. Indeed, they are values that Americans hold dear. And they are all values embodied by Judge Barrett.

I first got to know Judge Barrett during her 2017 confirmation process for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and I was struck by her exceptional character and bright legal mind. Additionally, I met with her shortly after her Supreme Court nomination and spoke about her qualifications on the Senate floor, during a recent press conference, and in an op-ed for the Indy Star.

New Indy Star Op-ed

This weekend, I penned an op-ed in the Indy Star about the confirmation hearings for Judge Barrett.

My hope is that Judge Barrett’s confirmation hearings this week before the Senate Judiciary Committee will be informative and productive, not unlike those that led to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s bipartisan confirmation in 1993. Judge Barrett deserves no less. As a fellow Hoosier, I have had the privilege of getting to know Judge Barrett and her family over the last several years. She is an incredibly sharp legal mind, a woman of great integrity, and a dedicated mother of seven. Anyone who fairly evaluates her superb qualifications and temperament will agree that Judge Amy Coney Barrett is the right person for the job.

ISIS Terrorists Arrive in the U.S. to Stand Trial

Last week, the ISIS terrorists responsible for brutally murdering innocent lives in Syria, including Indiana’s Peter Kassig, finally arrived in the United States to stand trial. Peter Kassig, an Army veteran, was in Syria on a mission of mercy delivering humanitarian supplies when he was brutally murdered at the hands of these terrorists. It is long overdue that the Kassig family, and all the victims’ families, finally see these terrorists brought to justice. I will continue working with the Kassig family and the Department of Justice to ensure that justice is served.

In July, I called on U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to bring these ISIS killers to justice. He delivered. Watch the video HERE. Learn more HERE

Protecting Hoosiers from Contamination on Military Bases

Adverse health effects have been tied to PFAS chemicals, two of which – perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) – have emerged as widespread contaminants to the drinking water sources of military bases across the country. I led a bipartisan letter with more than 20 senators calling for the Senate and House Armed Services Committee leadership to include several provisions in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act to prevent and address PFAS contamination.

The Department of Defense is taking some steps to address the contamination; however, additional action is needed to address the immediate concerns of citizens near these military bases who are desperate to know what exposure to these contaminants means for their health and the health of their families.
