Dear Friend, This morning Senator Dianne Feinstein warmly greeted Donald Trump's extremist nominee for the Supreme Court—ignoring the majority of the American people who want this confirmation process to wait until the next president is sworn in.1 It's horrifying for so many reasons that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell went ahead with these hearings, including the fact that at least one Republican, Sen. Mike Lee, recently tested positive for COVID-19.2 With the election just three weeks away, this confirmation process shouldn't be happening at all. But most senators, including Democrats, are treating this like business as usual. A majority of Americans want the confirmation process to be delayed to January, and we need to do everything possible to follow their will. More than 200,000 of us have sent letters and called senators demanding that they try to stop the hearings. Will you donate so we can ramp up the pressure? If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Senator Cory Booker began his Judiciary Committee opening statement by saying, “This is not normal.”3 He called out the Republicans on the Committee for rushing the confirmation for Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. He called them out for violating their own precedent they set in 2016, and for putting committee members in danger by showing up after having been diagnosed with COVID-19.4 But the rest of the senators proceeded as if this were just a typical nominee being discussed in typical times. They’re surrendering to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and enshrining Donald Trump’s ideology on the Supreme Court for generations to come instead of fighting for our democracy, and this cannot stand. Senators, especially Democrats, must use every procedural tool to slow down the hearings, tools that, according to a new memo, could hold off the confirmation until January.5 Time is running out to stop the country from ending up with an extremist Supreme Court that puts our basic rights and our democracy itself in jeopardy. Will you donate to help stop Trump’s Supreme Court nominee? Thanks for standing with us. Robert Cruickshank, Sources: 1.
