Our country is grappling with the biggest public health crisis in a century.

More than 210,000 Americans are dead and millions more have lost their jobs -- all because our federal government has failed to respond to this pandemic by listening to the experts, following the facts, and trusting the science.

The White House itself has experienced a major outbreak of COVID-19 because Donald Trump and his staff refused to adhere to basic safety guidelines.

Our people are dying, and we could have stopped it. Our Republican elected officials are ignoring the reality of this crisis even as they themselves fall ill. This cannot go on.

Here in Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp and his administration are more concerned with staying on Donald Trump's good side than with taking action to slow the spread and flatten the curve. Meanwhile, students and parents are struggling with distance learning or making the tough decision to return in-person schools. Our economy has taken a massive hit. And case numbers are growing at an unsustainable rate.

This year, we need to elect leaders to our state legislature who will stand up to Brian Kemp, Donald Trump, and their partisan allies. We need leaders who believe in truth over lies and facts over fiction. We need leaders who will fight to protect lives and fight this pandemic.

We need scientists on the job.

Dr. Rebecca Mitchell, GA HD 106 Before running for office, Donna was a chemical engineer in the health care industry. Michelle, an anesthesiologist, and her husband have both served on the front lines of the COVID crisis. And Rebecca is a public health scientist, a veterinarian with an additional doctorate in epidemiology.

These women are the leaders who will help Georgia through this pandemic. Governing with grit, intelligence, and an abiding belief in reason and the truth of science, they will take our state out of the destruction caused by the negligence of our GOP officials. Unlike Kemp and his allies, they will not fail us.
