Dear Friends,

In nearly two decades of working in Washington, I have never seen a time where the heads of the faith-based policy offices in D.C. felt the need to put out a call for protecting our democracy in advance of an election.

Yet that's where we are in this nation in 2020. A newly-released Faith Leaders' Statement on Integrity, Safety, and Fairness in the 2020 U.S. Election notes that "we are deeply troubled by any actions or statements that intimidate voters or deny safe and equal access to voting, or that sow doubt in electoral outcomes and raise a threat of violence. ... An election 'won' by undermining democratic processes is a loss for us all."

Our statement provides helpful language for sermons, group study, and for sharing on social media as people of faith engage in activities between now and November 3 in support of a free and fair vote, including counting every vote after the election.

Among the 32 signatories are myself, two NRCAT board members and over a dozen NRCAT national organizational members. We include a call to action, imploring our political establishment to immediately end efforts to suppress the vote and "publicly commit to respect the true election results, regardless of who wins."

NRCAT is part of several non-partisan national efforts where you can volunteer for election protection, including Lawyers and Collars and TurnOut Sunday, which is looking for chaplains to monitor the polls in vulnerable communities in AL, AZ, FL, GA, MI, NC, OH, PA and WI.
