Friends, The Louisiana Legislature has been hard at work...hard at work trying to take away our Governor's powers to protect us, that is. There is too much to report in one email, so we will try to give you some of the highlights:
- Tony Spell, angered by the Emergency Orders restricting in-person gatherings at the start of the pandemic, called Governor Edwards a "Godless Governor" as he testified in support of HB9, which would effectively clear him from charges he currently faces for putting our community at risk of contracting COVID-19 when he refused to stop in-person church services.
- In a campaign stunt to help his bid for Congress, State Rep. Lance Harris brought a bill that would punish local governments and universities for cutting their police budget...he did this without input from local governments or universities. Further, he did not have any solutions to account for accross the board budget cuts that would affect more than just police budgets, nor did he have any basic facts about local police forces or current city budgets for police forces when asked.
- Though unemployment insurance is proven to be one of the most effective ways to boost an economy in recession, the Republicans of the House Labor & Industrial Relations Committee unanimously voted against Rep. Duplessis' bill that would increase the weekly unemployment benefits for the people of Louisiana.
Are you as fired as we are over all of this?
