(New Orleans, LA) – Felicia Washington understands that justice does not come without someone willing to stand up and fight for those who have been violated in the worst ways imaginable.
Nearly twenty years ago, Felicia’s dear friend was sexually assaulted by a New Orleans police officer who used his position to abuse women in our community and disrespect his office and colleagues.
Keva was the lead prosecutor in the case that resulted in conviction and a prison sentence. Coincidentally, both the defense attorney and judge in the case are campaigning to be District Attorney. But as Felicia recalls, it was Keva who stood up for the women and victims in a case that changed her friend’s life forever.
“I [saw] my friend become very stand offish, staying inside, or just working, working, working . . . keeping her mind off of it. But Keva made us feel like there was nothing to be afraid of and to stand up for ourselves,” Felicia recounted in this video. “She (Keva) worked night and day to make sure justice came about. She would always say ‘Call me if you need me. Call me if you need me,’ and we needed her. With that case, we needed her a lot.”
Felicia shares here emotional encounter with the criminal justice system and Keva’s relentless fight on behalf of victims here.
