Celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day and centering indigenous communities in our story.

We are going to get through the coronavirus outbreak together. If you are experiencing symptoms or are looking for more information, you can visit the website of the CDC or the Illinois Department of Health. We are closely monitoring the situation and its effects on the people of Illinois and our nation as we work together to keep our families and communities safe.

John.

Chicago was built on stolen land. From its start as a central trade hub for the people who lived on Lake Michigan before our country ever existed, to indigenous communities here in Chicago today, we owe more than recognition. On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we can take steps towards correcting the record.

Honoring Indigenous peoples, here in Illinois and across the United States, won’t address the deep inequity they face. But this is a critical first step to acknowledging their central role in our nation’s story, and in the steps we need to take to address long-standing injustice.

As a member of the Congressional Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States, I’m proud to stand with my colleagues and advocate for national resource, education, healthcare, and criminal justice policies that put indigenous communities first. Today — and in the years ahead — let’s continue that fight.

Gracias,

Jesús "Chuy" García
