John --
Brand New Congress is proud to announce that two more future representatives are joining our coalition of candidates for 2020. Mark Gamba, in Oregon’s 5th District and Mckayla Wilkes in Maryland’s 5th district have both been fighting for progressive reforms, turning out and stepping up for their communities, time and again.
Mckayla Wilkes, Maryland’s 5th District:
Mckayla Wilkes is a rare candidate because she has experienced first-hand the injustice built into our current legal system. She has lived through struggles many women face in a system that favors the wealthy over people of color and those in poverty. Mckayla works tirelessly every day to provide for her family and her community, through work, through her education, and through her advocacy for the homeless population of her district.
The MD-05 incumbent, Steny Hoyer, has been in that seat for nearly half a century. Even when his party had full control of the House, Senate and Presidency, Hoyer voted in favor of his big donors instead of the people. Mckayla’s message is loud and clear -- it’s time for change.
As a Representative in Congress, Mckayla will be an inspiring example of juggling single motherhood, activism, and service. She will bring a fresh perspective and much-needed leadership as a young, working-class woman of color.
Mark Gamba, Oregon’s 5th District:
Mark Gamba has been fighting for his district for years. He currently serves as Mayor of Milwaukie, Oregon, where he has championed one of the most ambitious Climate Action Plans in the state. His district is home to a diverse group of people, industries, and landscapes, and everyone in Mark’s district has been impacted by the ever-growing climate crisis. Mark is fighting to be the voice of his people through his support of the Green New Deal, universal healthcare, and combating systemic poverty and economic injustice.
Mark first announced his petition to run against Rep. Kurt Schrader in April. Rep. Schrader has repeatedly voted for policies that cause environmental and social harm. As mayor Mark has deep roots in his community and he knows they are ready for authentic representation in Congress and he’s ready to take his hard work and dedication to the halls of Congress.

Mark and Mckayla are challenging entrenched Democrats who have amassed a combined $1 million in corporate PAC contributions in this election cycle alone. They are joining the BNC slate to stand strong with their fellow candidates to build the community this country needs to disrupt the status-quo.
Can you contribute today to help Mark and Mckayla join more BNC candidates on the Hill in 2020?
