Today kicked off the first day of hearings on the illegitimate nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court — at a time when Republican Senators have COVID and the Chair of the Judiciary Committee has refused to take a COVID test for more than a week now. During opening statements, Senate Democrats passionately raised the importance of access to health care and protections for Americans with preexisting conditions, given the Supreme Court is slated to hear a case on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act on November 10. In just one example, Sen. Amy Klobuchar poignantly highlighted a pair of identical twins who would face drastically different access to health care simply because of one them has diabetes. The focus was sharply on the likelihood that Barrett will invalidate our nation’s health care law and, with it, protections for those with preexisting conditions. Democrats repeatedly reminded the country that Donald Trump promised that all judges he nominates will overturn the ACA, and that Barrett’s writings make clear she meets this test. Alliance for Justice is working directly with Senators and their staff, and, since the process began, we have been the go-to source for policymakers, the media, and the American public in prepping for this important fight.
