For many Americans, today is still known as Columbus Day. Here in Minnesota, I’m proud to wish you a Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!
Today, we honor our Native friends, family, and neighbors, including the five tribes in Minnesota's 8th Congressional District: the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.
While we celebrate the histories and cultures of Native communities, I want to acknowledge that Native people are often left out of important conversations about the future of our state. We need to change that.
Non-indigenous people must do more to end the racism and systemic inequities that Native communities face.
As your Congresswoman, I will ensure that Native people are always at the table when we’re discussing how the 8th district will move forward, and I will fight for tribes to have sovereignty over their lands and clean, safe water. I will also hire staff to specifically work with Native people and make sure our district offices are accessible.
We must all play our part in making change. Celebrating our Native friends, family, and neighbors today is one step. Showing up to the ballot box in November is the next.
