In all of United States history, there has only ever been a total of 10 Black senators in the U.S. Senate. The very first two were from right here in Mississippi: Hiram Revels and Blanche K. Bruce, who both represented our state in the 1800s.

Since then, Mississippi hasn’t seen another Black senator, and most states have never elected a Black candidate to the U.S. Senate. But this year could be a breakthrough for Black Senate candidates.

Not only do we have the opportunity to re-elect Senator Cory Booker , my friend and the first Black senator from New Jersey. We can make history by electing five additional Black Democrats to the Senate: Ms. Bradshaw in Tennessee, Mr. Harrison in South Carolina, Mayor Perkins in Louisiana, Rev. Warnock in Georgia, and myself.

If the combined six of us are elected, not only will we have regained the Democratic Senate majority: We will have achieved the most diverse Senate in U.S. history.

My future colleagues and I will make great additions to the United States Senate. Senator Booker is an outstanding advocate for the people of New Jersey. Marquita is the bold leader Tennessee needs. Jaime will fight for South Carolina’s working families. Mayor Perkins will work for ALL of our neighboring Louisianans. Rev. Warnock will bring service to Washington. And me, I’m running to expand Medicaid and help Mississippi become the welcoming state I know we can be.
