MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS October 6 - October 12, 2020 THE WEEK IN BRIEF Click Here to Watch The Missile Defense Mondays Video On Monday, it was announced by the Space Development Agency (SDA) that L3Harris and SpaceX had been awarded contracts to develop satellites for the SDA's Space Sensor Layer. The companies will each build four wide field of view satellites and launch them in 2022 as part of the Tracking Layer Tranche 0. Also on Monday, it was announced that Azerbaijan fired an Israel Aerospace Industries built LORA missile in Armenia. Two days later, Armenia fired a Tochka-U tactical missile against Azerbaijani troops. That same day, Azerbaijani defense forces intercepted a long-range missile attack from Armenia. On Tuesday, Russia performed a successful test launch of its Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile and hit a target 450 km away in the Barents Sea. The Tsirkon missile was launched from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and Russia claimed it flew at speeds over Mach 8. Shortly after, Russia announced that it planned to carry out three additional test launches of the Tsirkon this year. Also on Tuesday, it was announced that Palestinian militants had launched a rocket from Gaza into southern Israel the previous day. The firing broke a week-long lull in attacks but did not cause any damage or injuries. On Friday, the U.S. Navy took the delivery of its AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar Systems at the CSEDS in Moorestown. The radar is set to be fitted on new Construction Flight III Destroyers, beginning with USS Jack H Lewis in 2024. On Saturday, North Korea held its 75th-anniversary military parade, displaying known and new missile capabilities. During the parade, North Korea displayed several of its newest missile capabilities like the KN-25, KN-23, and KN-24. North Korea also showed a new SLBM and ICBM capabilities. The SLBM was labeled the Pukguksong-4A and the new ICBM is believed to be based on the Hwasong-15 ICBM and is the largest missile to be displayed by North Korea. MISSILE DEFENDER OF THE WEEK Master Sergeant Brandon Renko MSgt Renko is currently serving as Superintendent, 611th Air Operations Center, Joint-Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska. As the Superintendent, he is a principal advisor to the commander on issues related to unit readiness, morale, admin actions, discipline, quality of life initiatives, and mentoring for 11 different AFSC’s. Furthermore, MSgt Renko provides the commander with a mission ready force prepared to execute unit operations. MSgt Renko graduated from Samuel Clemens High School in 2001. He enlisted in the Air Force on April 15, 2003 and upon graduation from Basic Military Training, he stationed at Keesler Air Force Base (AFB) for Weather Technical Training, later earning his CCAF in Weather Technology in 2012. His first duty assignment was with the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Operational Weather Squadron at Sembach AFB, Germany. MSgt Renko’s additional tours of duty include Moody AFB, Georgia; Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina; Creech AFB, Nevada; and his current assignment to Joint-Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. His contingency deployments have taken him to Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, and Afghanistan. MSgt Renko has a wide breadth of experience supporting different platforms including the F-22, F-15 Strike Eagle, A-10, RQ-170, and multiple combat deployments, some of which were in direct support of Brigade Combat Teams.
