Pete here. I wish this wasn't the message I had to write. But the Republican party has abandoned morals and embraced hypocrisy in a mad dash to repeal reproductive rights for millions of Americans.

NPR has reported that "States led by officials supportive of abortion rights are preparing for a world without Roe v. Wade." They've also (concerningly) written that if the landmark decision falls, "regulation of abortion would fall to state lawmakers."

The good news is that we have a chance to mount a full-force Democratic opposition on the state level. Checks and balances exist for a reason. The Supreme Court isn't all-powerful, and liberal leaders like New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy have led the way in outlining plans to codify Roe into state law and enshrine its protections for American citizens -- no matter what Amy Coney Barrett does next.

But we need Democratic state leaders in order to make that happen, friend. Abortion can't only be safe and legal in New Jersey. We need liberal governors, state senates, and statehouses all across America -- and a federal Congress that will be an ally to any legislation local Democrats pass.

Right now, we don't have that. Republicans hold 52% of all state legislative seats. They have "trifectas," meaning control of the governorship, the statehouse, and the state senate in 21 states. And of course, they hold the national Senate as well. We're trying to change that, but Republicans are fighting to keep us locked out of government precisely because they don't want us resisting their rulings. And we're short of the funds we need to get a footing and start making headway to protect the right to choose.

That's why I'm reaching out. I want to raise $10,000 before midnight, money earmarked for exactly the kind of progressive champions who will fight to the last for the protections of Roe v. Wade. I don't have big donors to call. I have a group of like-minded, hard-working, nevertheless-persisting supporters like you.

Please, help us mount a defense of bodily autonomy. Help us gain the seats we need to protect this country from Republican tyranny. Vote with your dollar, right now, and send the GOP a clear message: You can confirm your justice, but you'll never deny us our fundamental rights.
