Hi John,
It's Indigenous Peoples' Day, an occasion to celebrate and honor the Native and Indigenous people in America.
From the moment Christopher Columbus and other European colonizers landed, Indigenous people have suffered at the hands of our government.
From the Trail of Tears to the Dakota Access Pipeline to COVID-19, the American government (and by extension, those that have benefited from the brutalization and marginalization of Native and Indigenous people) has failed to respect tribal sovereignty or afford Native people the basic dignity and support that all Americans are entitled to.
It says a lot that, until just 2018, not a single Native woman had been elected to Congress. But even with Rep. Deb Haaland and Rep. Sharice Davids's historic victories, the racial composition of our state, local, and federal governments is ill-equipped to address the challenges facing Indigenous communities.
We need to stand with Indigenous people and support their efforts to secure a seat at the table. Run for Something knows that today's state legislators, school board members, and local electeds are tomorrow's congresspeople and governors.
So, John, on this Indigenous Peoples' Day, I'm asking you to split a donation between Run for Something's nine endorsed Indigenous candidates. They're all running for local offices today to build sustainable power for their communities -- and they need your help to do it.
Native activist and founder of the DNC's National Native Caucus Frank LaMere always said, "Nothing changes unless someone is made to feel uncomfortable. Nothing changes unless we make ourselves uncomfortable."
This Indigenous Peoples' Day, who are you making uncomfortable? What are you doing to make yourself uncomfortable? What are you doing to make change?
Thank you,
Amanda Litman
