October 12, Indigenous Peoples' Day, commemorates the histories and cultures of Native American communities around the country -- and sheds light on the adversities these overlooked populations continue to face.
The Indigenous Law and Policy Center has stated that the Trump administration has been a “complete disaster” for Native Americans. Since his election, Trump has approved pipelines through tribal lands and water supplies, reduced protections for national Indigenous monuments, and encouraged xenophobia among his supporters, who’ve told Indigenous protesters they should “go home.”
Native Americans are reclaiming this day -- a day that formerly served to honor a man who enslaved and murdered millions of Indigenous peoples -- and demanding our national leadership address the issues they face. But Indigenous Peoples' Day is still not considered valid at the federal level -- and in his typical racist fashion, Trump has said, “to me it will always be called Columbus Day. Some people don’t like that. I do.” Today, we need to know if you agree with Trump, or if you’ll stand with us in honoring Indigenous communities:
