My husband fell from a helicopter. He survived, but the man I'd loved over half my life was gone.

My husband, U.S. Marine Corps SGT Aaron Zurn, suffered a traumatic brain injury that changed him forever.

I had known him since I was 11 years old and he was 13. We started dating in high school and the rest was history. He gave me 3 beautiful children that I stayed home to take care of while he fought for our country.

And just like that, our lives turned upside down.

Aaron's injury severely and permanently damaged his brain, leaving him with the mental capacity of a 13 year old.

So I became his full time caregiver and went back to school to become a teacher.

It wasn't always easy. I didn't always know if or how we would make ends meet.

I didn't always know how I was going to pay Aaron's medical bills, put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads.

But I was never going to stop trying. I was never going to give up. Because the Aaron I married never would have either. [link removed] ([link removed])
And then, our lives changed forever again -- but this time, it was a blessing greater than I could have ever imagined.

U.S. Army First Lieutenant Eric Benson was a fighter, just like my husband.
In 2003, he came within 100 yards of losing his life to a vehicle explosion.

This wasn't a standard improvised explosive device (IED) -- it leveled an entire building.

As a result, Eric had a traumatic brain injury and other medical complications that put him in a wheelchair.

Eric's wife Caira has become his full time caretaker, like I did for Aaron 10 years ago.
