Paola's mother

Dear friend,
This summer, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights-the
highest judicial body for human rights in Latin America and the
Caribbean-ruled to protect schoolgirls from sexual violence and
harassment in our landmark case, Paola Guzmán Albarracín v. Ecuador.
This decision came 18 years after Paola, then a 16-year-old student,
took her own life after repeated abuse from her school's
vice-principal.
Today, on International Day of the Girl, we celebrate this long-sought
victory and its far-reaching impact in protecting thousands of girls
from sexual violence in Latin America and the Caribbean. We also want
to honor and thank Paola's mother, Doña Petita Albarracin, who has
spent all those years tirelessly fighting for justice for her daughter
and for the rights of students in the region.
