Dear friend,

I’m writing today to share that my close friend and colleague at the Center for Popular Democracy, Ady Barkan, is releasing his memoir, [Eyes to the Wind: A Memoir of Love and Death, Hope and Resistance. I hope you’ll help support his work and read this powerful book.]([link removed])

In late 2017, in the midst of the fight over a terrible tax bill and at a time of widespread despair, our country’s attention was riveted for a moment by a young father with ALS who appealed to a Senator in a deeply emotional exchange. “Think about the legacy you’ll have for my family and your grandchildren if you take your principles and [vote no on the GOP tax scam]. You can save my life. You can be an American hero,'' Ady said to then-Senator Jeff Flake.

In the pages of his memoir, Ady explains how the love for his baby son, and his lucidity about the precious time we have on this planet, propelled him to travel across the country to meet America and its people, and listen to their fears and their dreams. And he talks about the optimism peering through the darkness of this moment. Because what he learned in this journey is that in every corner of this country, people understand that the problems that afflict us can in fact be solved, if we have the individual courage to act, and the political courage to resolve them. Solving them is up to us: it requires us to turn to each other, to join in community, to fight for each other, to save our democracy and to build a society that honors those commitments to one another.

The moral clarity of Ady’s message—and the power of his example, a dying man standing up for millions of others—has had a lasting impact on this country. Even as his illness has progressed and he has become unable to speak, his voice has boomed loudly in the struggle to protect immigrants under siege, to try to stop Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, and now to make sure that in our country, healthcare is a human right.

Ady teaches us–in his writing and in the way he lives his life–that we must be courageous, but that individual courage is not enough: we must be able to stand with, and rely on each other. I, like thousands of people, have been transformed by Ady’s tenacity and moral clarity, and I am so delighted that the world will now get to read his memoir and be moved by the brilliance of his message.
