There’s a growing cluster of COVID cases around the White House―including the President himself, who was hospitalized over the weekend.

While there, he received an experimental drug that he liked so much that he promised to make it available for free to any American who needs it to battle COVID.

Regeneron, the company that makes the monoclonal antibody therapy the President received, has already received more than $450 billion in taxpayer funds to develop this treatment!

But the contradiction here is stark: American taxpayers already pay to develop the vast majority of the drugs Big Pharma turns into big profits. Why is this the case for COVID and not cancer?

1. Codify open science practices that accelerate innovation, reduce costs, and strengthen the evidence base on which our medicines system rests.
2. Create public sector capacity for full-cycle pharmaceutical innovation and production of essential medicines.
3. Use the full power of compulsory licensing to ensure access to essential medicines.
4. Take the vaccine industry into public ownership to assure its products are available to all.
