Hi John - When children arrive at our borders seeking safety in our country, we should treat them with compassion. But a new rule proposed by the Trump administration would treat them like criminals. The Department of Homeland Security is proposing a new rule that would expand the types of invasive biometric information that can be collected from people seeking asylum and filing immigration applications. This would include all children, including infants and toddlers. Please speak out against these harmful new regulations by submitting a personalized comment today! The procedures that kids will be subjected to include iris scans, palm imaging, voice recordings, photos of their face, scars or tattoos. They will also be required to submit DNA samples. Should they be accepted for asylum in the U.S., they may be required to continue providing DNA samples until they become U.S. citizens, a process that can take years. Children are particularly vulnerable to invasions of privacy that can result in long-lasting negative consequences. While it may be inconvenient to change your password when your identity is stolen, it is impossible to change your fingerprint or your DNA. That is why in most cases, parental consent is required before data like these are collected from children. Children crossing the border to the U.S., however, often are traveling alone or with parents who may be concerned about the consequences of not complying with U.S. border authorities. Refusal could result in expulsion from the country. Speak out against this massive violation of children’s privacy! Under the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, coercing children to submit biometric data without explicit understanding and consent violates their rights and causes indefensible mental stress. We should be providing protection to children arriving at our borders, not subjecting them to further obstacles to finding safety. These children are not criminals. The Trump administration is collecting comments on this proposed rule through October 13, and Save the Children Action Network has written a response. But we need our supporters who care about protecting children to submit a personalized version of the comment to amplify our voice. We’ve created a draft for you. To customize it, simply add a sentence or two about why you are concerned about this issue. Submit a personalized comment today – children’s sensitive personal information must be protected! Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
