Houston Chronicle says 'Gilbert's mix of can-do optimism and plainspoken pragmatism is a welcome alternative. He told the board he would have voted against the 2017 Republican tax cut because it was slanted toward corporations and the wealthy. He supports police reform - including much stricter vetting of police academy graduates. But he also called the 'defund the police' mantra wholly misdirected. He also speaks eloquently about the need for humane and comprehensive immigration reform.

I am not running to play political games and throw temper tantrums, like the clown who currently “represents” us. I threw my hat in the ring to get things done — to focus on our rural communities, expand broadband, invest in our infrastructure, take on Big Pharma, and much more. I am a doer, and I’m focused on delivering for you.
