Dear friends,
You might remember that last month, Governor Pete Ricketts decided to terminate the emergency supplemental food assistance program – the only governor in the nation to end this life-saving safety net.
We thought a petition with hundreds of signatures might get him to budge, but we just received this update from the Lincoln Journal Star:
So we’re giving him a piece of our mind:
Nebraska is an agricultural state. It is unconscionable that we grow so much of the nation’s food yet so many Nebraskans go hungry. Emergency SNAP was helping to change that.
Hundreds of thousands of families were able to access healthy and fresh foods instead of surviving on packaged dinners. Our most vulnerable were able to eat. It helped local food banks handle the increased strain. Real Nebraskans know how it kept us going.
But Pete Ricketts says the pandemic is nearly over. He’s glad he canceled emergency assistance.
Despite statewide and nationwide surges in COVID cases, Pete Ricketts is more interested in political power plays than ensuring his constituents can eat.
It’s time to make our voices heard. We’re collecting testimonials about this callous decision, and you are invited to share. Whether you were personally harmed, you’re appalled as a Nebraskan, or you simply want to be counted among the dissenters, please take a minute to add your name:
Democracy means holding our elected officials accountable. Let’s send Pete Ricketts a message, loud and clear.
Thanks for your help,
Kate Bolz
