John,

I’ll be straightforward with you: private ICE detention centers need to close.

The entire for-profit prison industry is morally corrupt. Private, for-profit detention centers exist to profit off the misery of their detainees. And the stories coming out of ICE detention facilities are simply horrific.

I visited one in person recently so I’m speaking from direct experience.

Immigrants are put in prison on deportation orders, but months and sometimes even years may go by before they’re even deported — as private companies profit off of their pain and suffering. And the conditions they are forced to live in are absolutely cruel. It’s modern day slavery.

Women are coerced into receiving unnecessary gynecological surgeries so that medical professionals can turn a profit. Phone calls to contact loved ones cost an arm and a leg in fees. Even just to house them is incredibly costly.

And who is tasked with footing the bill? Taxpayers — people like you and me. We are forced to pay the tab that ICE has left us by cruelly detaining undocumented immigrants in their for-profit detention facilities.

We need to put an end to this racket once and for all, which is why I’m calling for the closure of ICE’s private detention facilities. They are simply too costly and too cruel to justify.

This isn’t an easy position to take. People tend to shy away from this because they can’t separate it from calls to “defund the police” — but I refuse to be silent.

I know the GOP will attack me for taking this bold stance, but I know I can fight back because of you. Will you chip in to help me keep fighting?
