** Day Laborer Outreach
------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you so much to Osvaldo, Tanya, and Dulce for providing our day laborers with hygiene products, snacks, fruits, and face masks during last weekend’s outreach. We are so grateful to be able to serve our community by providing them some of the basic needs they deserve.

A huge shoutout to Chula Vista Food Service for their produce donations and for helping us fill over 70 bags to distribute. We are so glad to have a team that leads by example and always treats our beloved day laborers with dignity and respect.

Want to donate to our Day Laborer Outreach program? Email us at [email protected] to donate face masks, snacks, hand sanitizer, neon t-shirts and other donations.

** Water Drop
------------------------------------------------------------

The Fall season may have officially started, but the desert heat has no end in sight. Temperatures last weekend remained just shy of 115° in some of the areas that we trekked through.

These desert conditions will give you a lightheaded feeling, headaches, stomach aches, and physical fatigue. We feel these symptoms during our water drops even thought we are well prepared, properly fed, hydrated and rested. Now, imagine those passing through without those same luxuries.

Temperatures will remain high for at least another month. No matter the weather, nor how extreme the temperatures get, we have not, and will never leave the desert. As long as people are crossing through, we’ll be there. The temperatures are still expected to reach up to 110-115° in some areas tomorrow so we are still only taking experienced Water Drop volunteers for the time being. Thank you all for your patience. As soon as we can safely take new volunteers we will. For the meanwhile, sharing posts and making donations allow us to continue our work, and be efficient as possible.

For any questions about Water Drops, reach out to Water Drop Program Co-Director James Cordero, [email protected]. Thank you for your continued support!

** Familias Reunidas
Bond Program
------------------------------------------------------------
Another person was released from detention!

It was not without difficulty but we have freed yet another person from detention through our Families Reunidas Bond Program, Kuo. He is a 22-year-old Chinese asylum seeker who was in detention for an alarming 11 months. He was detained at the Otay Mesa Detention Center, which continues to have an extreme number of COVID cases.

We cannot stress enough the urgency of bonding people out of detention centers, as we have now seen 21 confirmed deaths in ICE custody, and the conditions in detention centers across the US continue to be negligent and horrifying.

Kuo is now headed to New York to start a new life with his sponsor. We could not have achieved his freedom without the help of Freedom For Immigrants and without all of your donations.

We need YOUR help to save lives! Our bond funds are running low and we need your support more than ever in order to free our folks. All donations make a difference no matter the amount, and every dollar is spent towards getting someone out of detention!

** Shelter Aid
------------------------------------------------------------

Remember the shelter expansion we funded at the Roca de Salvación shelter? Take a look at how far they’ve come with the construction! We are overjoyed at watching what a beautiful space they have built from the ground up in order to have a better space for our migrant families.

Thank you to Pastor Salvador, his team, the construction workers, and all of YOU for making this possible.

** BA Presentations
------------------------------------------------------------
We are so grateful to have been a part of last week’s US-Mexico border fact finding panel: Zooming to the Border for Human Rights. Special thanks to Magdaleno Leon Rose Avila for being our moderator!

It was an honor not only to speak on our work, but to learn about the efforts of our fellow organizers. It is imperative that we open up these discussions to discover what is happening on both sides of the border. We hope that together we can continue working towards more humane immigration policy.🖤 🦋

** Vans and L.A. label collaborate to celebrate immigrant roots, working-class heroes
------------------------------------------------------------
By Kailyn Brown

"Since launching their unisex streetwear line Kids of Immigrants ([link removed][UNIQID]) four years ago, Daniel Buezo and Weleh Dennis have become known for making sartorial statements tied to causes.

Their first fashion release in 2016 was a T-shirt emblazoned with the word “love” in bold block letters. A year later, they painted a custom jumpsuit for singer Kehlani’s 2017 Coachella performance ([link removed][UNIQID]) to raise awareness about the mysterious disappearance of women in the Washington, D.C., area. And in 2019, the brand’s Love Has No Borders ([link removed][UNIQID]#rebelltitem11) hoodie raised money for the San Diego-based nonprofit Border Angels to provide resources for migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in Tijuana.

Buezo and Dennis took the same approach when they designed their first sneaker, a collaboration with Costa Mesa-based Vans. The shoe, which is set to drop Friday, was originally scheduled for a release in May around the brand’s four-year anniversary but was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic."

** Green Cards for Kids
------------------------------------------------------------

With our new Green Cards for Kids program, we are so lucky to be able to work with immigration attorney Fabiola Navarro who will be representing these children.

It is crucial that we help these children as they have already suffered enough abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

With your continued support, we can help pay for the legal representation these children deserve in this critical time of their lives.

Please consider donating! No amount is too small!

ICE Is Planning To Fast-Track Deportations Across The Country

The new policy will give agents the ability to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants without a hearing in front of a judge.

By Hamed Aleaziz

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have started to implement a policy that allows officers to arrest and rapidly deport undocumented immigrants who have been in the US for less than two years, according to internal emails and documents obtained by BuzzFeed News.

The Trump administration’s effort — to expand quick deportations to undocumented immigrants across the US who cannot prove they have been in the country continuously for two years before they are picked up — was blocked by a federal court judge soon after the policy was first announced in 2019. But in June, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit lifted the preliminary injunction, opening the door for ICE officers to use expedited removal across the country, a policy that will allow the agency to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants without a hearing in front of an immigration judge."

ICE Arrested More Than 100 Immigrants In California Weeks Before The Presidential Election

The arrests were the latest effort by ICE to target the state and its policies that reduce the cooperation between local police and federal agents when it comes to immigration enforcement.

By Hamed Aleaziz

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested more than 100 immigrants across California in an operation last week, the latest effort by the agency to target the state and its policies that reduce the cooperation between local police and federal agents when it comes to immigration enforcement.

The details of the operation, which occurred last week in Northern and Southern California and were described to BuzzFeed News by a source with knowledge of it, are expected to be released in a news conference on Wednesday in Washington, DC."

ICE Has Plastered Graphic Billboards About Immigration On Highways Around Pennsylvania

“This is not what a responsible government agency with power and force should be doing. This is creating such a dog whistle.”

By Hamed Aleaziz

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday installed bold black-and-red billboards along highways across the key swing state of Pennsylvania, depicting the faces of, as ICE put it, “at-large immigration violators who may pose a public safety threat.” Current and former ICE officials, along with legal experts, labeled the move as politically motivated, a naked attempt to use the wedge issue of immigration to help President Donald Trump in his reelection bid.

In a press release issued Friday, ICE officials described the billboard campaign as a way to “educate the public about the dangers of non-cooperation policies” — i.e., local officials who refuse to hold immigrants in their custody who are wanted by ICE for longer than required by local laws."

Otay Mesa detainees say shift of health services to private contractor complicates care

Immigration detainees say the quality of care is even worse than it was when provided directly by Immigration and Customs Enforcement

By Kate Morrissey

"After spending the first part of the pandemic in the public spotlight for a large COVID-19 outbreak at Otay Mesa Detention Center, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has contracted out medical care at the facility to the private prison company that owns and operates it.

Detainees interviewed by the San Diego Union-Tribune say the medical care, which had already been criticized by them and their advocates, has grown even worse than it was under ICE.

Detainees complained of missed and late medications, multiple-day waits for medical attention and a lack of transfer of records that left staff in the dark about what treatment individual detainees were supposed to be receiving. It has also meant that those who had been approved for specialty care, such as oncology and orthopedics, would have to begin the lengthy process anew."

‘We Need to Take Away Children,’ No Matter How Young, Justice Dept. Officials Said

Top department officials were “a driving force” behind President Trump’s child separation policy, a draft investigation report said.

By ** Michael D. Shear ([link removed][UNIQID])
, ** Katie Benner ([link removed][UNIQID])
and ** Michael S. Schmidt ([link removed][UNIQID])

"WASHINGTON — The five U.S. attorneys along the border with Mexico, including three appointed by President Trump, recoiled in May 2018 against an order to prosecute all undocumented immigrants even if it meant separating children from their parents. They told top Justice Department officials they were “deeply concerned” about the children’s welfare.

But the attorney general at the time, Jeff Sessions, made it clear what Mr. Trump wanted on a conference call later that afternoon, according to a two-year inquiry by the Justice Department’s inspector general into Mr. Trump’s “zero tolerance” family separation policy."

Massachusetts leaders demand probe after video shows ICE agents stopping West Roxbury jogger

"BOSTON —Massachusetts leaders are demanding answers and calling for an investigation after video shows a Black man who was jogging on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury being confronted by several men in camouflage uniforms and masks claiming to be ICE agents.

The video, which was posted to social media, shows part of the interaction that Bena Apreala said lasted approximately 5 minutes.

Apreala said he was out for a run on Tuesday when men in camouflage uniforms and masks jumped out of two unmarked SUV, stopped him and began questioning him without identifying themselves.
