Trump has amped up his racist vitriol against Rep. Ilhan Omar, asking a rally crowd in Minnesota “What is going on with Omar?” before accusing the congresswoman of ballot harvesting, being “crooked and corrupt,” and “[telling] us how to run our country.”
Trump’s racism and xenophobia knows no bounds. Last year, Trump’s attacks against Rep. Ilhan Omar led the rally crowd to chant “send her back.” And in the wake of the president splicing together footage of Omar and the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the crowd again echoed the sentiment -- this time with “lock her up.”
The good news is these anti-immigrant beliefs don’t represent the majority of the country; The Pew Research Center has released polling that shows 66% of Americans support increasing immigration and 68% are in favor of accepting more refugees.
Yet Trump and the GOP will only continue with the misinformation campaigns to stoke racism and chauvinism. At this same Minnesota rally, Trump proclaimed that Biden wants to let in people “from the most dangerous places in the world” and “will turn Minnesota into a refugee camp... overwhelming public resources, overcrowding schools and inundating your hospitals.”
This isn’t just about prejudice against immigrants fleeing war-torn nations -- Trump’s hatred and racist policies have been there since the beginning, from his attacks on DACA to the Muslim Ban, and will only continue to hurt the AAPI community and our allies. We must fight back this Election Day, but right now, we’re $6,390 short of where we need to be to increase our campaign efforts.
Friend, we wouldn’t ask for your help closing the gap if we didn’t think our movement was absolutely critical. But you know the stakes of electing progressive and diverse leaders, while other Americans are chanting for them to be locked up. Trump’s racist fear mongering will only make things worse.
