I want to make sure you are aware of a major policy victory in California—thanks in large part to the Independent Institute’s efforts.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has just vetoed ([link removed]) a bill that would have mandated an anti-capitalist "ethnic studies" course as a requirement to graduate high school. The content of this course would have been guided by a model “ethnic studies” curriculum released by the state Department of Education this summer.

Though much of the “progressive” California education establishment was behind this effort, a major backlash stemming from the content of the proposed model curriculum is what prevailed in the end.

As our Senior Fellow Williamson M. Evers ([link removed]) first pointed out in the Wall Street Journal (see here ([link removed]) and here ([link removed]) ), the model curriculum “boils down to vulgar Marxism, identity politics and victimology ... and portrays capitalism as oppressive.” Dr. Evers's devastating criticisms of the curriculum—especially regarding how American Jews, Irish, Koreans, Armenians, and others are treated as somehow acquiring “white privilege”—galvanized broad opposition to its mandated implementation and forced Newsom's hand.
