Hi John,

In April, hundreds of heavily-armed demonstrators swarmed the Michigan State Capitol building, protesting the state’s coronavirus precautions and encouraging violence against Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Many signs showed swastikas or confederate symbols. One protester had a doll with brown hair hanging from a noose.

President Trump cheered them on.

Yesterday, we learned that the FBI has stopped a plot to violently overthrow the government, kidnap, and harm Governor Whitmer. This is clear and chilling evidence that Trump’s reckless encouragement of white supremacists and armed insurrectionists has dangerous consequences.

We need leaders who will denounce white supremacy and violence, not encourage it. Help us elect candidates who will disarm hate and root out racism.

Trump’s own acting Secretary of Homeland Security identified white supremacists as the “most persistent and lethal threat” to our country. Yet the president consistently fans the flames of racism and violence.

Just last week, at the first presidential debate, Trump told the far-right, extremist Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by.” He then encouraged voter intimidation on election day, urging his supporters to flock to polling places to “watch closely.”

Our democracy and our safety are at stake. We are working day in and day out to elect leaders who are committed to stopping violence and dismantling white supremacy. Make a gift today to ensure we can continue this work through the final stretch of this historic election season.

Thank you,
Renée (she/her)
