OUT ON THE TRAIL

Yesterday we released our Out on the Trail report, a comprehensive analysis of the race, gender and sexuality of LGBTQ candidates running for office in 2020. Check it out here!

A record-breaking 574 openly LGBTQ candidates will appear on the November general election ballot, a 33% increase since 2018! And at least 1,006 ran this year!

Also exciting: the number of queer, bisexual and genderqueer/non-conforming candidates increased dramatically in 2020.

Daily Kos also launched their 2020 candidate guide for every Senate, House, and gubernatorial election this November. You’ll definitely see some familiar LGBTQ faces!

QUEERING CONGRESS

Gina Ortiz Jones spoke with KSAT News about health care, border issues and pandemic recovery in Texas’s 23rd Congressional District. Her team also reported some great news: they raised $1.7M in quarter 3!

We agree with LGBTQ Nation: Jon Hoadley is facing the most disgustingly homophobic race in Michigan’s 6th District as national Republicans called him “creepy” and accused him of pedophilia.

News is still coming from Minnesota’s 2nd District, where Congresswoman Angie Craig is waiting to find out what date her election will be held.

Georgette Gómez spoke with NBC7 San Diego about her top priorities for California’s 53rd Congressional District and her plan to win.

U.S. Senator Ed Markey endorsed Beth Doglio for Washington’s 10th Congressional District this week! Beth also spoke with The Seattle Times about the difference between her platform and her opponent’s. Learn more here!

THIS WEEK IN ATTACKS

During a debate this week, Erin Zwiener’s opponent in the battle for Texas state House District 45 stated “I do believe we need to keep left-wing dogma out of our schools” when asked about LGBTQ issues. You can watch the full debate here with remarks at 24:24.

After posting a satirical video about Donald Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis, Jenna Wadsworth is receiving death threats, homophobic hate messages, and more. Her opponent is the honorary co-chair of the Trump/Pence 2020 campaign team and the largest recipient of campaign donations from the racist Sons of Confederate Veteran's NC Heritage PAC. Help Jenna win here!

Provocateurs in San Diego are sending false and misleading text messages in an attempt to slander mayoral candidate Todd Gloria and boost his opponent.

Unable to attack Colorado state Rep. Brianna Titone for her policies, the Colorado GOP is resorting to transphobic attacks in the race for House District 27. Briana is one of only four openly trans state legislators in the U.S.

The Tennessee GOP is sending attack mailers against Brandon Thomas, claiming his policies – which include expanding healthcare access – would kill healthcare as we know it. Brandon will make history as one of the first openly LGBTQ state legislators in Tennessee.

RAINBOW WAVE

Happy Latinx Heritage Month! Celebrate with three of our Spotlight Candidates: Ricky Junquera (Florida HD-118), David Ortiz (Colorado HD-38) and Lorenzo Sanchez (Texas HD-66), with trailblazing Texas Rep. Mary González (HD-75) moderating. Watch their full conversation here!

Vice President Joe Biden just announced he is endorsing Ann Johnson for the Texas House of Representatives! Her district HD-134 is one of the most-flippable in Texas.

Jessica Benham will make history in November as the only Autistic openly LGBTQ state legislator in the country. She reflected on this historic opportunity and the 30th anniversary of the Disabilities Act in this piece for ADAPittsburgh.

LGBTQ voters – and LGBTQ candidates! – are changing America’s political landscape for the better. Learn more about this unprecedented year here.

REST IN POWER

Trailblazing trans activist and journalist Monica Roberts passed this week. Her work to highlight trans issues and prioritize trans lives cannot be overstated. Learn more about her lasting impact here.
