I’m reaching out today to share why I’m supporting Mike Espy in his race to represent Mississippi in the U.S. Senate, and why it’s so important that we all do everything in our power in the final weeks of this election season to make sure he wins.
Before I do, can you spare $10 right now to help fuel Mike’s grassroots campaign?
Mike and I have a lot in common. We both served in the Clinton Administration – Mike as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and me as Deputy U.S. Attorney General. And we’ve both broken some barriers — Mike served as the first Black congressman from Mississippi since the Reconstruction era, and I was privileged to serve as the first Black U.S. Attorney General in our nation’s history. And we both care deeply about equality, justice, and voting rights for every American.
Electing Mike this November would be another historic step in the fight for equality. With the racial justice movement growing all across our country, electing Mike would ensure that we have more Black representation where consequential decisions about justice and equality are made — the United States Senate.
But his election would not just by symbolic — he would do a whole lot of good for the people of Mississippi. Mike’s number one priority is health care. He wants to expand Medicaid in Mississippi and lower prescription drug prices so that no one has to worry about affording the medicines they need to stay healthy. Mike will fight to improve the Affordable Care Act and defend it from GOP attacks. And he will be the leader Mississippi needs to recover from this public health crisis.
Finally, I know Mike will advance the fight for voting rights — a cause that has animated my career in public service and my current work at the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. My friend, Mike Espy, will fight for a stronger democratic system that allows the people of Mississippi equal access to the ballot box and the opportunity to actually choose their representatives.
I don’t say this lightly: Our democracy is on the line in this fall’s elections. Electing a leader like Mike and flipping the Senate are critical for Mississippi and for our democracy.
Mike needs all the help he can get if he’s going to win. So, that’s why I’m humbly asking: Can you rush a contribution of $10 or more to show your support?
Thank you,
Eric
