Dear John, In countries all over the world, passionate supporters like you are shining a light on human rights abuses, fighting for gender justice, protecting freedom of expression and defending people persecuted simply because of who they love, the colour of their skin or what they believe. We’re so very grateful for your support. During these extraordinary times and with continued uncertainty ahead, we know this one thing for sure: the only way we’ll build a world where everyone can fully embrace their rights is by sticking together. Staying strong together is how we’ve accomplished any consequential win for humanity. It’s why our Write for Rights campaign, where hundreds of thousands of people send a letter on International Human Rights Day in support of people they’ve never met, has accomplished so much. Last year, Amnesty supporters took more than 6.5 million actions with Write for Rights. By speaking out together, we’ve helped free countless people. Like Fred Bauma and Yves Makwambala, prisoners of conscience who were imprisoned in March 2015 for their role in pro-democracy activism in the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than 170,000 Amnesty supporters successfully campaigned for their release. “Every letter, every visit, every word has strengthened us,” says Yves Makwambala, “and reinforced our determination in this long but just struggle for freedom and democracy.” Thank you for the essential role you play as we continue to strive for freedom and democracy for all. Thank you for choosing to help. Sincerely, Ailish Morgan-Welden
