Lifting Us All: Working Toward a Hunger-Free America & How You Can Help This October
Join Our Voter Mobilization Campaign
We believe that the more low-income Americans who vote, the more power we will have as a society to push elected officials to enact the policies needed to eradicate poverty and hunger. This month, we're offering a special volunteer opportunity to work as a nonpartisan "Precinct Captain" in an assigned neighborhood in a select state, where volunteers will remotely use prepared materials and talking points to encourage low-income Americans to vote. Find out more or sign up to be a precinct captain here and help us strengthen the anti-hunger movement this election cycle!
Pandemic-EBT Extended in Continuing Resolution
The Continuing Resolution passed by the Senate and signed by President Trump last week includes $8 billion in food aid. The resolution extends the Pandemic-EBT program through September 2021, providing funds for families whose children normally receive free or reduced-price school meals while students are learning remotely. This is an important step in reducing child hunger in the upcoming year, and each state will determine how their Pandemic-EBT benefits are distributed. However, the Senate still needs to pass a more comprehensive relief package including extended unemployment benefits, housing protection, and a 15 percent increase for SNAP.
USDA Hunger Hotline Connects Thousands to Food
The USDA Hunger Hotline continues to provide vital food assistance to Americans facing unprecedented levels of hunger as we enter the eighth month of the pandemic and ensuing economic recession. Almost 23 percent of callers last month asked for help enrolling in SNAP, resulting in 1,721 callers being referred to SNAP application resources.
Save the Date: Tuesday, December 1st

Giving Tuesday is only 2 months away! This year it's more important than ever for us to come together and give to those hit hardest by the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes families with children, senior citizens, college students, and newly unemployed adults — particularly those in the Black and Latinx communities who have suffered disproportionately from Covid-19.

Mark your calendars for December 1st, and we look forward to all that we can accomplish with YOUR help.
Trump Administration's Move to Include Signed Letters in Food Boxes "Illegal and Immoral"

35 days before the election, the Trump Administration started putting signed letters from the President inside federally-funded food boxes. HFA CEO Joel Berg said: "To politicize this is absolutely outrageous. It essentially blackmails nonpartisan food charities into aiding Trump’s re-election campaign by threatening more Americans to go hungry if these food boxes are not distributed. This move by the Trump Administration is illegal and immoral.”

We have a number of upcoming volunteer opportunities around the country from food pantry service to food delivery. Or, volunteer from home through virtual opportunities like food assistance phone banking and starting your own fundraiser.

Last week, volunteers with HFA passed out flyers in New York City to spread the word about food benefits programs like SNAP and WIC.
