Stemming the Flow

What to Know: Measures the Trump administration has taken at the border is helping to address the immigration crisis at our southern border.

The TPPF Take: Securing our border while ensuring that asylum applications are handled in an orderly, humane manner is the best way to de-escalate the current crisis.

“Migrant families endure real trauma and hardship on their way to the U.S. border,” says TPPF’s Andrew Brown. “That’s often based on the false promises of easy asylum and free entry. Keeping families together in decent, humane conditions while they await the resolution of their asylum claim can help reduce this trauma.”

Bye Bye, Love

What to Know: When people leave a state, they take their paychecks with them. This has big consequences for states like Illinois, which has lost $310 billion in income to out-migration since 2000.

The TPPF Take: States like Texas benefit, and states like Illinois—and New York and California—should pay attention.

“People move to Texas because they’re attracted to the Lone Star State’s jobs and opportunity,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore, who came to Texas after serving in the California Assembly. “States that drive them away—with high taxes and ridiculous regulatory burdens—would do better to imitate what works: liberty.”

Are Fries Out, Too?

What to Know: According to Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, if you eat hamburgers or use straws, you are “part of the problem” of climate change.

The TPPF Take: Unfortunately for Mayor Pete, there are plenty of photos on the internet of him eating hamburgers and using straws.

“The U.N.’s own models show that if the entire United States eliminated all fossil fuels (an impossible goal), global temperatures would drop by only 0.053 degrees Celsius,” says TPPF’s Katie Tahuahua. “Banning straws and hamburgers isn’t going to save the planet—it will only make life a little less enjoyable.”
