John,
Over the past seven months, I've worked with my team, state officials, and experts in various fields to ensure Michiganders can weather the storm of two simultaneous crises -- the COVID-19 outbreak and a severe economic downturn. I've made decisions that were extremely difficult to save lives and protect livelihoods.
Like other governors around the country, I've made decisions to protect people and their families. The stay home, stay safe order we instituted in Michigan kept rates of COVID-19 at bay and bought us the time we needed to combat the virus head on.
Look, John, we all want this crisis to be over. Nobody wants to be stuck inside where we can't see the people we love or go to the places we want to go. But the only way we can get through this difficult time is by pulling together as Americans -- by pulling together as Michiganders.
As of this afternoon, Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued charges against the people involved in a terrorist plot to overthrow Michigan's state government.
For me, it serves as a reminder that we can never let our political differences cause us to hate one another. We can disagree about politics but it should never lead to violence. That's not who we are and runs contrary to the founding principles of this great country.
Hatred, bigotry, and political violence have no place in America, and they have no place in Michigan.
In the difficult weeks and months ahead, in our ongoing fight against COVID-19, let's remember that first and foremost, we are all Americans. We are all Michiganders. The forces that seek to divide us, incite violence, stoke hatred, and prey on our differences cannot be allowed to prevail.
On the path to progress, let's stay strong and resolute that our differences are what make us truly great. And let's remember that we can only be successful in this moment if we are unified and meet our formidable challenges head on.
I will continue to protect, defend, and serve everyone in the great state of Michigan. We are all in this together.
With hope,
Gretchen
