Donald Trump declared himself “the best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico” after finally releasing the billions in aid Congress approved for the island -- even though it’s been over three years since the destruction of Hurricane Maria.
Trump throwing Puerto Ricans a bone is yet another poorly disguised political ploy. He knows that he is struggling with Hispanic voters overall, and he also knows that he needs to win over the many displaced Puerto Ricans who now call Florida home if he wants to secure those electoral votes.
To Trump, Puerto Rico and its people are no more than another “shithole country” that should be treated with disdain, at least until it’s politically advantageous for him to act otherwise.
Friend, we can’t let Trump continue to get away with this. One solution is finally getting Puerto Ricans the representation that they deserve as American citizens. A 2019 Gallup poll found two-thirds of Americans support statehood for Puerto Rico, but we need more recent numbers. That’s why we’re asking for your view now:
