The first wealth is health.

-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Comrades,

How did Donald Trump get COVID-19? We haven't seen the complete results of contract tracing from the White House, and it sounds like we probably won't. But our amateur hypothesis is this: the President caught it from someone who caught it from someone else, etc., and if he'd done anything to control the spread of the virus back when it was just other people getting sick, it would never have gotten near him.

The ruling class could draw a few different lessons from this. They could realize that our fates are linked after all — that you can't be the only rich or safe or healthy person among the sick and starving, even with a healthy security force ([link removed]) . Or they could try the same thing they’ve always tried: denial, walls, and violent repression, maybe just a little more this time, and hope it keeps them above the danger it creates.

Well, while receiving white-glove treatment in a hospital room with a chandelier, Trump said he wouldn't approve any more federal relief, which means forcing more people into unsafe work sites and out onto the street during the pandemic. If we thought an ER visit and an experimental drug cocktail might show a capitalist the light, we can stop wondering. They won't give us the power to keep ourselves healthy, even to save their own lives.

That's why workers at Alameda Health System are on strike right now ([link removed]) . If we care about each other's health, we have to take back power for ourselves, because the ruling class can’t be trusted or shamed into doing the right thing. There's no other option but to win. So please sign up for strike support ([link removed]) !

This is literally a fight for the health of our community; as we fight tooth and nail for every other aspect of a just society, that can't be taken for granted.

Solidarity!

** TAX THE RICH: PROP 15 Banner drop

------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, October 9 | 4–6 p.m.

RSVP for location info ♿️

Come out and help with Prop 15 freeway overpass banner drops on October 9 during rush hour (4–6 p.m.) to publicize the importance of this ballot measure and urge the passing motorists to vote YES on Prop 15. This will be a socially distant, masked event as we make a public statement less than a month before the election, and just days after ballots are mailed out to voters, that corporations and wealthy Californians must pay their fair share of taxes to support public schools and services.

Help thousands of drivers and passengers to see the message and build some social media amplification!

We will occupy 8 overpasses with 12 banners, and need a total of at least 36 people (3 per banner, five is nicer to hold a sign or two alongside and take pics) to run the show.

RSVP and someone will be in touch about which overpass we'll need support at!

** DIRECT ACTION TRAINING SERIES

------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 | 10 a.m.–noon

Online via Zoom – register for info ([link removed]) ♿️

Do you want to learn how to plan and implement direct actions? Do you want to develop direct action strategies in our organization? Do you want to prepare for the November election results?

Comrades, we learn to organize through many means. Political education to sharpen our analysis, canvassing to practice skillful communication, art builds to creatively spread propaganda. We must also learn strategic direct action.

These past few months, we have seen a national uprising against racist police terror and fascist violence. We need to prepare not only for a continuation but an escalation. It will take mass working-class action to combat fascism, police brutality and a capitalist class that will not hesitate to swiftly and violently crush any public demonstrations. As socialists, we must create coherent strategies, be equipped with reliable tactics, and confidently lead our own direct actions.

Join us for a two-day training led by Frailty Myths, an organization dedicated to building leadership skills for women, queers, and GNC folks. It is required that you sign up for both days, and strongly encouraged that you lead future training to share acquired skills. Hosted by East Bay DSA, DSA San Francisco, and Sunrise Bay Area.

** TAX THE RICH: LABOR FOR PROP 15 PHONEBANK

------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, October 10 | 12:30–2:30 p.m.

Online via Zoom – RSVP for info ([link removed]) ♿️

In cities and counties across the state, organized labor and DSA chapters are uniting to win Prop 15 and demand a just recovery for the working class!

Join DSA chapters and union members from up and down the state to make calls to voters in support of Proposition 15, a.k.a. The Schools and Communities First Act! We all have a stake in making our state a better place, and talking to voters is how we win. We'll have training, tools, and solidarity from unionists and DSA members from all over California.

Prop 15 is a crucial piece of legislation that, if passed, will reclaim ten to twelve BILLION dollars a year for California's public schools and services by closing a commercial property tax loophole that has been benefiting only a fraction of corporations and wealthy investors for decades.

This proposition is a crucial step towards redistributing the wealth and resources that corporations have been hoarding for years back to the working-class public. So please join us to help spread the word. Together we can build a California that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.

** THE ORGANIZER’S TOOLBOX: HOW TO HAVE A ONE-ON-ONE

------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, October 12 | 7–9 p.m.

Online via Zoom ([link removed]) ♿️

In this training, we will discuss and practice the art of the one-on-one meeting. This is a powerful and foundational skill for any organizer—it helps us form a political relationship with somebody, understand more about who they are and what motivates them, and gives us an opportunity to make a concrete ask of them.

One-on-one meetings can help us develop political relationships with other working-class people, build leadership in your committee, and move people to action. Come to this training to learn the components of a one-on-one and get some real-life practice.

Note: While everybody is welcome, this training event is geared towards people who are already active in the Democratic Socialists of America or aligned organizations.

** LABOR CENSUS PHONEBANK

------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, October 14 | 6–8 p.m.

Online via Zoom – RSVP for info ([link removed]) ♿️

Help the Labor Committee Phonebank Members for the Labor Census! We want as many members as possible to participate in this census so we'll need all hands on deck to call through our membership list.

The labor census is an initiative to find out more about EBDSA members and their workplaces. As a socialist organization, EBDSA needs to be engaged in the task of building working-class power. There are many ways this can be done, but organizing ourselves at the point of production is one of the most effective and it starts simply by meeting, connecting, and talking with others in one’s industry.

Our chapter’s greatest strength is its membership. At the moment, many of our members aren’t aware of how they can build our movement within their workplaces. This is where the census comes in. By finding out what kind of work our members do, for whom, and what level of organization exists at their workplaces, we can start to support our members (unionized or non-unionized) to organize and build power in their workplaces.

*No experience necessary. Onboarding and training will be provided.*

Let me give you a word of the philosophy of reform. The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle. The conflict has been exciting, agitating, all-absorbing, and for the time being, putting all other tumults to silence. It must do this or it does nothing. If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.

-- Frederick Douglass
