Timely COVID-19 test results are essential to slowing the spread of the coronavirus and responding to the pandemic. Today, I’m proud to share with you that I introduced a plan that would promote a faster turnaround of COVID-19 test results.

Test results after 72 hours are less relevant and even pose further complications. Someone who tests negative has to wait longer to return to work and risks losing out on a paycheck. And it delays someone who tests positive from taking necessary precautions, quarantining, and starting the process of contact tracing.

I consulted with public health experts to create a plan that would incentivize labs to provide faster COVID-19 test results to ensure a timely and effective response.

Right now, labs receive a flat rate of federal reimbursement for COVID-19 testing regardless of when they return results.

My plan would tie reimbursement to test result turnaround times and reward labs with faster turnarounds:
