Building a better democracy

Dear John,

After weeks of speculation, they have finally released Theresa May's resignation honours list. It's everything we've come to expect.

19 new Lords will be joining the nearly 800 peers in the largest legislative chamber in the democratic world. France manages on 348 members. Spain with 257. India, with over a billion people, has just 245.

With rumours still circulating that Prime Minister Boris Johnson could himself soon seek to pack the Lords with his own political cronies – this year could see the already super-sized House swell to an even more absurd size.

Our legislature should be more than a chummy private members' club. Once the current political turmoil is the subject for history lessons, these 19 new lords will have a lifetime pass to vote on our laws.

The time has come to scrap this outdated system – an ancient relic of the feudal age – and replace the Lords with a democratic second chamber. Sign our petition for a fully accountable upper house fit for the needs of a modern democracy.

Best wishes,
Darren Hughes,
Chief Executive,
