Dear John,
Yesterday afternoon, the Government published its new Climate Bill. Stop Climate Chaos has been campaigning for a strong climate law since 2007 - so yesterday was a significant milestone on the path to faster and fairer climate action!
The new Bill significantly improves the 2015 Climate Law but
substantial weaknesses still remain. That’s why we’ll be working hard with TDs and senators to get those weaknesses fixed. And as always,
our power to influence these discussions comes from the climate movement - and people like you who have demanded change, time and time again. We couldn’t do this without you. With that in mind, I’d like to
invite you to join us next Monday evening at 5pm. We’re going to host a webinar to discuss the Bill in some detail, sharing our reaction and thoughts on next steps.
Join us for a webinar on Monday as we share our reaction to the Climate Bill
The Bill now goes to the Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action where TDs and Senators will carry out pre-legislative scrutiny before the Bill is debated in the Dáil and has its first big vote. So there is still an opportunity to campaign for changes to the final law. We’ll discuss the changes we want to see during Monday’s webinar - both myself and my colleague Oisín Coghlan will share Stop Climate Chaos’s reaction to the Bill. Will you join us?

We’re also delighted to be joined again by Dr Diarmuid Torney, Associate Professor at the DCU School of Law and Government. Dr Torney specialises in climate governance and global climate politics. He outlined what he’d like to see in the Climate Bill during our webinar on 22nd September. So we’re really looking forward to hearing his take on the Bill, now that it’s been published. We’re also delighted to welcome Prof John Sweeney, one of Ireland’s leading climate scientists, who has been advocating for stronger climate action for many years.

The Climate Bill that was published yesterday is far from perfect. I’m also very conscious that this Bill is just the framework for action. It’s the rules of the game, not the end result. But the fact that the game has started is very good news. And as I said above, we’ve the climate movement to thank for getting us to this stage. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for all that you’ve done to push climate up the political agenda. I hope to see you on Monday as we reflect on where we are - and think about what comes next.
In gratitude,
Sadhbh
