If you tuned into the vice presidential debate last night, then you saw a few things. You saw Kamala Harris expertly lay out the stakes of this election, and how a Biden-Harris administration will fight the pandemic, expand healthcare, and more. And you saw Mike Pence repeatedly refuse to tell us how repealing the Affordable Care Act and coverage for people with preexisting conditions makes sense during a pandemic. And, of course, you saw The Fly .
You also saw something else that should disturb every American. Mike Pence refused to answer the question of what he would do if President Trump won’t concede the presidential election.
Pence’s refusal to answer comes after President Trump flatly refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power on multiple occasions , including during the presidential debate. We’ve had contentious elections before, but never in modern history has the president suggested he would somehow not leave office if he loses, and argue that America was incapable of holding a free and fair election.
Look, presidents don’t refuse the peaceful transfer of power after elections, John. Tin-pot dictators do.
America is more than just a place, it’s an idea, a grand experiment in democracy, and a democractic republic. It’s not for anyone, and least of all a man like Donald Trump, to destroy what generations of Americans have built and sought to perfect. We won’t let him.
Our fate is in our hands. We can leave it all on the table and deliver a landslide rejection of Donald Trump and his Republican enablers, up and down the ballot.
