Hi John,
Sajid Javid's only been Chancellor a few weeks but already he’s making mistakes. He’s in charge of picking the new Governor of the Bank of England - but instead of making it public, democratic and fair, he’s keeping the recruitment process behind closed doors.
The new Governor could well have to deal with the aftermath of Brexit, a falling pound and a climate emergency. And our central bank is meant to serve everyone equally. So the fact just one politician and a handful of unelected civil servants get to decide who runs it, is outrageous.
Together we need to demand proper public scrutiny on this very important decision. If thousands of us take to Twitter, Javid will start to feel the public pressure to make this totally undemocratic process more transparent - that’s people power in action.

We commissioned a YouGov poll and revealed that just 1 in 5 people trust Javid to make the right decision.
And a group of 28 cross-party MPs signed our open letter calling on Javid to make the shortlist of candidates public. [2] |

Javid’s hearing from MPs and the media, but to really to force his hand, he needs to feel the heat from members of the public too. And since an election could be called at any minute, he’ll want to jump at any opportunity to please the public!

So far this process is so secretive, we have no idea when Sajid Javid will make the announcement. With no public timeline or transparency, Javid is making a mockery of our democracy. And with trust in politicians at an all-time low, the country needs to trust that the next governor is the best person for the job. Transparency is key to that.
Positive Money was set up so people could demand a fairer and more democratic money and banking system. Demanding a clear and transparent appointment of the most powerful position at the Bank of England is what we’re all about. |
