The Jewish population today is almost equally divided between Israel and the diaspora. While most diaspora Jews stand behind Israel in principle, relations between the two communities have seen increasing tensions in the past years.
Many diaspora Jews support the concept of a pluralistic religious Jewish community, while in Israel only the Orthodox stream of Judaism is officially recognized. Politically, most American Jews identify as left-of-center, while Israelis have elected right-wing governments for the last two decades. In Europe, the identification of Jews and Israel by the outside world has made the community a primary target for militant anti-Israel terrorists.
To discuss the status of Israel - Diaspora relations today, we bring together three of the most important Jewish voices from three continents: David Harris, Chief Executive Officer of the American Jewish Committee, Isaac Herzog, Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel and Rabbi Delphine Horvilleur, one of the intellectual leaders of the French-Jewish community today. The discussion will be moderated by Center for Israel Studies' Director Michael Brenner.
