John,
One important thing Alexandria, Rashida, Ayanna, and I have in common — besides being members of the Squad — is that Justice Democrats fought to power our campaigns to victory in 2018. And they proved that our wins were not a fluke, but a mandate for change when they helped unapologetic progressives like Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman unseat longtime incumbents this year.
The Squad is here to stay and it’s growing. Justice Democrats is working to bring in a new generation of diverse, progressive leaders who fight for the interests of working people. Not the ultrawealthy, not the corrupt, and definitely not corporations. But that isn’t possible without strong grassroots support.
As my sister Ayanna always says, the people closest to the pain should be closest to the power. Justice Democrats-backed candidates like AOC and I know what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck, to experience loss and hunger. It’s because of our lived experiences that we can bring the voices of those who have been left behind to the halls of Congress. And it’s because of the struggles we faced that we know policies Republicans and centrist Democrats call “unrealistic” are not only possible but necessary.
We’re getting closer every day to making bold, urgent policies like Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and total cancellation of student debt the law of the land, but we need a strong progressive voting bloc to get there.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
