President Jair Bolsonaro’s politics are threatening to the well-being of Brazil’s indigenous, Afro-descendant, women and LGBTQ+ population, in addition to the health of the Amazon Rainforest and the planet. APIB represents the strongest indigenous political force in Brazil today. APIB organizes the annual Acampamento Terra Livre (Free Land Settlement) that brings together thousands of indigenous people from more than 200 communities fighting for territorial rights.

Recent demonstrations by APIB include the gathering of Amazonian tribes in January of 2020 to express resistance to Bolsonaro’s policies. Specifically, the four-day tribal gathering opposed the new push by the administration to open protected tribal lands to commercial mining and agriculture. This is only the most recent manifestation of increasing invasions of tribal lands by illegal loggers and miners, contributing to the highest levels of deforestation, fires, and deadly clashes the Amazon has ever witnessed.
